When Arch Coal Company and Peabody Energy spun off parts of themselves into companies that became Patriot Coal Company, they also spun off more than $1.3 billion in promised health care and pension obligations to coal workers who put their lives and health at risk every single day. Thousands of these retirees are now afflicted with illnesses and injuries caused by their work in the mines, including black lung, cancer and crippling injuries that prevent them from enjoying their golden years.
Arch, Peabody and Patriot appear willing to turn their backs as these brave miners suffer and die from their work-caused illnesses and injuries without the health care benefits the companies promised them.
Therefore, we, the undersigned, hereby pledge our full support of the UMWA’s efforts to maintain the benefits promised by Patriot, Arch and Peabody. We will join with the UMWA in taking whatever steps are necessary to ensure that the promise of retiree benefits is kept. The UMWA’s fight is our fight.
